What Is Cursor?

Cursor is an AI-first code editor built on top of VS Code. Unlike GitHub Copilot, which runs as a plugin, Cursor is its own editor with AI woven into navigation, editing, and refactoring.

We use Cursor ourselves to work on ToolScout.tools, so our opinion comes from real daily use rather than a quick demo.

Cursor Pricing 2026

Cursor has a free tier good enough for light use and evaluation. The Pro plan (around $20/month) unlocks higher limits and more powerful models. For active developers, the time saved usually justifies the cost quickly.

Our Experience & Who It's Best For

Composer-style multi-file edits are the standout: building a new page or refactor is noticeably faster when you can describe it in English and let Cursor do the first pass.

Cursor is best for full-time developers and solo founders with medium to large codebases; for occasional coding, plain GitHub Copilot inside VS Code may be enough.

Cursor vs GitHub Copilot

Copilot is excellent autocomplete inside your existing editor. Cursor goes further by understanding your project structure and managing broader edits. If you want an "AI partner" that can modify whole features, Cursor is the stronger choice.

Our Verdict

Cursor is currently our favorite AI coding environment. If you write a lot of code, it’s worth trying alongside Copilot to see which fits your workflow better.
